The Wisdom of Letting Go
Kerrie Baker : UKRF Marketing & Comms DirectorAs summer slowly gives way to autumn, the natural world offers us a gentle reminder: everything changes, and nothing needs to be held onto forever.
Leaves begin to turn, daylight softens and the abundance of summer gradually gives way to a quieter season. We often think of autumn as a time of endings, but perhaps it is more helpful to see it as a time of transition — a natural invitation to release what we no longer need.
This connects beautifully with the Japanese concept of mono no aware: an appreciation of the impermanence of life. Rather than resisting change, mono no aware encourages us to notice its beauty and to appreciate each moment precisely because it will not last forever.
Just for today, I will not worry.
Just for today, I will not be angry.
Just for today.
These words bring us back to the present rather than asking us to control what comes next. We don’t have to have everything worked out. We don’t have to know exactly where the path will lead. We can simply meet this day as it is.
Perhaps, as autumn approaches, we can ask ourselves what we are ready to let go of. An old worry? A habit of self-criticism? The pressure to have everything under control? Or perhaps simply the belief that we should always be moving forward.
During your Reiki practice, imagine yourself like a tree releasing its leaves. There is no struggle, no forcing, just a natural letting go when the time is right.
And in the space created by letting go, something new can eventually grow.
This autumn, may we embrace change, appreciate what is here now, and trust that letting go can be its own form of healing.
